Military Five-Star generals going nuts!
George Dawe was an English portrait artist who painted 329 portraits of Russian generals active during Napoleon’s invasion of Russia for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace, Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Replace Face is an awesome Tumblr, he uses digital copies of these paintings as a basis for his own work which involves incorporating his friends, family and even some celebrities into the paintings using photoshop.
“One thing I’ve always wanted to try (I have a list) is to incorporate someone into a painting, mimicking the painterly brush strokes and making everything fit and work nicely and look natural and stuff. There’s an art to head swapping, I’ve seen so many awful attempts. The most important things to consider are anatomy, perspective and lighting. If you can get those things right, you’re more than halfway there. My artistic ability serves me well with this stuff, I can just tell if something looks wrong.” – Steve Payne, the artist (adapted from original work by George Dawe 1823-1825)
Yes Sir, No Sir!
A young man who does not have what it takes to perform military service is not likely to have what it takes to make a living. Today’s military rejects include tomorrow’s hard-core unemployed.

why mark zuckerberg?
These are amazingly divine! My dream is to one day pay someone to commission a piece like this for myself. So far, I only have the Gravatar photo a friend did for me a few years back. This made my day, thank you. I needed to see my man-crush, Robert Downey Jr, in some Napoleonic garb.
Too cool thanks for the post.
Going to publicize this further. Very fine integration of the light, shadow and color here.
Reblogged this on i want great things and commented:

Thank you for ‘liking’ my blog. I love these pictures, so beautifully put together. I have been lucky enough to see the originals and would love it if some of these could be quietly added to the gallery at the Winter Palace. Imagine the reaction of the visitors when they suddenly recognised someone they ‘knew’! Thanks for sharing.
